This is the first of a series dealing with the waste generated by contemporary consumer culture, and where it ends up. Post consumer waste was collected from California beaches, where it washed up from the ocean. Beach detritus, wood, variable dimensions; 2005.
This early work, from 1991, documented the despoiling of Mother Earth by humans. Suitcase, canvas, soil, plastic figures; 18" x 18" x 7 1/2"; 1991.
Shown in Ignite! The Art of Sustainability travelling installation, 2012-2015.
This work shows the extraordinary number and diversity of animal species that once lived in areas now occupied by farms, ranches, housing developments and shopping malls. Many people are not aware of the scope of this loss, which represents an extinction event of extraordinary proportion and speed.
This traveling installation, created with my colleagues Glenda Drew and Valerie Constantino and funded by Exhibit Envoy, explores and interprets California's great Pacific Flyway, through which millions of birds pass annually.
